Ginger Bread
Houses

On Tuesday, December 15, from 11:50-1:30ish, we will be creating our very own ginger bread houses. Actually, they are made of graham crackers! I need to ask you, as our Moms, Dads, or Uncle Billy Bob Joes, to help out! We will need the supplies mentioned below. Also, if you can lend a hand that day, just come! Any and all help will be appreciated! Come join the fun!

Note: It is perfectly OK for students to agree to bring different things and then share.

  1. Each child will need an assortment of candies, etc. These can be shared with others for an assortment. Examples: chocolate chips, red hots, peppermints, M & M's, cake "sprinkers," kisses, etc. Ice cream cones make great trees! Use your imagination here!
  2. Each child will need a package of graham crackers. They may bring sugar wafers for a roof, if desired.
  3. A cake decorating icing bag is a tremendous help, so if you have one, please sent it!
  4. Finally, and very importantly, they will need the icing. Lots of it! Recipe follows. Canned icing can be used if you can't make the recipe.

Royal Icing Recipe

This is the recipe for the icing that hardens somewhat. You may use canned icing, if you prefer.

Ingredients:

2 egg whites, 3 cups sifted powdered sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
Directions:
Combine egg whites, powdered sugar, vanilla, and cream of tartar in a small mixing bowl. Beat with electric mixer on high speed for 7-10 minutes or still the mixture is very stiff.
Keep the bowl covered with wet paper towels at all times to prevent the frosting from drying as you work. The frosting can be refrigerated overnight in a tightly covered container.

Stir before using. Makes 2 cups. You may need to double the recipe for the ginger bread houses.

Keep refrigerated in air tight container until use.
