A few months after Apollo
11 landed on the moon, Apollo 12 did the same, but, they explored
a different region of the moon, the Ocean of Storms. They brought
with them the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package. This was the
first time NASA had ever done experiments on another planetary body,
and was left for future astronauts to use while on the moon. One thing
different about Apollo 12 over Apollo 11 is that 12 landed in a precise
spot that was planned in advance, 11 just landed anywhere. Its primary
objectives were:
1. Perform inspection, survey and sampling in lunar mare area.
2. Deploy an Apollo Lunar Surface Experiment Package (ALSEP).
3. Develop techniques for a point landing capability
4. Develop capability to work in the lunar environment.
5. Obtain photographs of candidate exploration sites.
Its crew was Charles Conrad Jr., Richard Gordon, and Alan Bean. Something
interesting is that the rocket was struck by lightening, twice!, after
liftoff.
