After a ten-day mission, covering a staggering six million miles, Apollo
9 landed in the Atlantic Ocean. The primary objectives were to demonstrate
crew, space vehicle and mission support facilities performance during
a manned Saturn 5 mission; to demonstrate lunar module/crew performance;
and to demonstrate docking. All primary objectives were completed. Apollo
9 was the first mission to have all lunar hardware on board, was the
first test of the lunar module in space, first test of the Portable
Life Support System in space, and like Apollo 8 had live TV coverage.
Its crew was James McDivitt (commander), David Scott (command module
pilot), and R. Schweikart (lunar module pilot).
