INTRODUCTION

This web quest is about a book called Follow My Leader by an author named James B. Garfield. You will learn about a boy named Jimmy, how he becomes blind, and how he gets around while he is blind. Our site has a lot of fun things and activities to do. Hope you have bunches of fun on our site.

Tasks

Task 1:
In this task you are going to learn what it is like to be a blind person.

Procedure:
1. Get a blindfold.
2. Find a partner.
3. Get your partner to tie the blindfold around your eyes.
4. Ask your partner to direct you around the room.
Hint: It's a lot easier if you and your partner make up signals. Example: If your partner taps you on your right shoulder then you turn right, if your partner taps you on your left shoulder then you turn to your left, or if your partner taps you on your head then you stop.

Evaluation:
If you trust your partner: 25 points.
If your partner doesn't bump you into anything: 50 points.
If you make signals to direct the other person: 25 points.

Task 2:
In this task you will learn how to identify things.

Procedure:
1. Walk around a room with your eyes closed.
2. See if you can identify ten things in the room.
3. Next see if you can also get around the room without bumping into things.
Hint: If you walk the way that Miss Thompson told Jimmy to, it would be a lot easier to get through.

Evaluation:
If you can keep your eyes closed: 25 points.
If you identify ten things in the room correctly: 50 points.
If you don't bump into more than 2 things when you repeat this over again: 25 points.

Task 3:
In this task, you will learn to tell directions by the clock as Jimmy did.

Procedure:
1. Get in a small room that you know very well.
2. Get a partner to call out a time (6:00, 11:00.)
4. Walk to where the time would be if 12:00 was in front of you.
Hint: Imagine you being the hand or the center of the clock.

Evaluation:
If you know the room very well: 25 points.
If you go to the right time that your partner calls out: 25 points.
If your partner doesn't try to trick you in the game: 50 points.


Task 4:
In this task you will learn to write in Braille.

Procedure:
1. Look on pages 46-48 in your Follow My Leader book.
2. Write your full name in Braille.
3. Now write a small letter to Jimmy in Braille.

Evaluation:
If you write Braille on the subject: 25 points.
If you write your full name in Braille correctly: 25 points.
If you write the small letter in Braille correctly: 50 points.


Task 5:
In this task you will draw what you think a guide dog school looks like.

Procedure:
1. Get some paper.
2. Start to draw what you think a guide dog school looks like.
3. Color your picture neatly.
4. Research to see how different your picture is from a real guide dog school.

Evaluation:
If you draw a Guide Dog School: 25 points.
If you color your picture in neatly: 25 points.
If you research to see how different your picture is from a real Guide Dog School: 50 points.


Task 6:
Questions related to novel.

Procedure: Answer the questions in complete sentences.

Evaluation:
3 points for each correct answer.

1. Explain how Jimmy felt when he found out that he was blind?
2. Why did Jimmy scream at the people who tried to help him?

Chapter 3

2. What did Ms. Thompson mean when she said "Just because your blind doesn't mean that you can't see"?

Chapter 4
1. How did Jimmy react when he fell over the mop bucket?
2. Judge if Jimmy should have tried to wash the dishes.

Chapter 5
